Mutual Funds

i have been trying to get a gnucash file set up for my
daughter's mutual fund portfolio.  she bought 44.014 shares
of a fund for 22.72 which equates to 999.99808 but my
statement says 1000.  anyway, aside from the .01 issue (or
perhaps because of), gnucash won't let me define shares and
cost, it always tries to recalculate one or the other and i
end up with 1 share for 1000 or 1000 shares for 1 or some
such.  can someone please help me with this?  thanks.
