will the rpm command that you provided also work for Mandrake 9.2 I have really wanted to upgrade, but I'm new to linux and didn't really want to take the chance. I admit I'm a slave to the windows click and install, but I'm slowly coming into the light :) thanks in advance for the help.

Depends on your OS/Distro. Upgrading the software will do nothing
to your data; your data will still be there when you start up the
new version. For example, if you're on Red Hat, you can just
rpm -Uvh /path/to/gnucash-1.8.9...
and when you start gnucash after the upgrade you'll be running 1.8.9
and all your existing data will be there.

First, upgrade to 1.8.9. Second, make sure you have the gnucash-ofx
package(s) installed. Some binaries distribute it separately due to
external dependencies (i.e. libofx). A properly built gnucash will
present you a File -> Import -> OFX/QFX menu option where you can
import the downloaded OFX file.
