a running balance, you might really want to try to put a simple spreadsheet

including checking, saving, investment, etc. and would very much simplify the 
process of doing what you seem to want to do.

Gnucash does a WHOLE lot more than that and in order to be useful to those of 
us who have more advanced needs than having an electronic copy of a check 
register, needs to use a double entry accounting system.  Dumbing down the 
program in order to fill a void that is supremely filled with various 
spreadsheets, electronic checkbook registers, and glorified pocket 
calculators is very unnecessary.
