Tear-off Menu

There is a tear off menu off the main menu  - Open recent files
I tear this off, thinking that it would be really useful for negotiating my 
four active files but as soon as I use it it vaporises.
I was using 1.8.8-1 from Debian testing but upgrading to 1.8.8-4 hasn't 
changed what merely promises to be a useful feature.
