If by "write" you mean "print":
1. Enter a transaction in the check register, making sure you either
click the enter button in the tool bar or tab through to the next empty
transaction.
2. Click somewhere in the 'check' you want printed to make sure it's
the active transaction
3. Select "Print Check" from the File menu, fill out the dialog(s),
click OK
Major limitation: You can only print one check at a time. You may have
to play with the custom layout if your brand of checks doesn't exactly
fit one of the prepared options.

I'm having trouble finding the check register. I have
been able to enter a transaction debiting my checking
account and expensing Dining.
I think I am missing something or other.
