new account tree

I have an "Accounts" account tree established.
I'd like to start a new account tree so I went to the File
menu and selected the "new account tree" item.
All this did though was add another tab under the existing
"Accounts" tab labeled the same. When I looked closer it
wasn't a new tree since adding transactions to one tree
added them to the other tree.
This surprised me. Is it supposed to work like that?
Here is what I'm actually trying to do. Perhaps others have
a better way to achive my goals (I'm pretty new to gnucash and
electronic bookkeeping in general).
I lived in Trinidad (TT) between 2000 and 2003. When I moved there,
from Canada, I transfered (with an FX) money to a TT bank account from
my normal CAD chequing account. I had normal monthly expenses
(groceries, gas, etc) while there. When I moved back to Canada, I
transfered (again with an FX) my TTD money into my CAD chequing
account.
I'd like to track all that activity using gnucash but I don't want
my expenses incurred in T'dad to go into my Expenses subaccounts
that track my CAD transactions. I know gnucash can handle it by
doing FX transfers but I want to keep them separate. That is why
I wanted to setup a new account tree (called 'TT Accounts').
I could then simply do a transfer from my CAD account (in 'Accounts'
tree) to the TTD chequing account (in the 'TT Accounts' tree) to get
things started. Log my expenses/income in the 'TT Accounts' tree and
then finally, do a transfer from the TTD chequing account back to my
CAD account.
Does that make sense? Can I transfer from an account in one tree
to an account in another tree? Is there a better way? I considered
started a new file but would rather have it in a single file if I
can.
Thanks,
Kevin.
