"Profits" in Summary Bar

I just missed this conversation by three weeks :) .  But I still have a
question about it.  Where, in Gnucash, can I get a breakdown of how it
calculates the profit value?  Is it for the year?  Or is it for the
quarter, month..?  Also, although not as important, how does it calculate
the net assets and the net assets grand totals?  I'm not an accountant, so
don't shoot me :) .  Thanks!
