linking gnucash to data in postgres

Yes and no.  PG worked fine in 1.6, but the code was extremely rigid
and not extensible.  When the business features (and other data types)
were added to 1.8, the changes to the sql backend were not made to
keep it up to date.  Right now Linas is working on some new
infrastructure which should make keeping a SQL engine up to date much
easier.  So, this situation should NOT continue into the next release
(i.e., 1.10/2.0 should have a working SQL backend).

I guess it depends what you mean by "registration of a soccer player"
and also what kind of entry is triggered.  Even gnucash+SQL wont
trigger anything from outside events.
