Almost duplicate transactions

Just read this whole thread.  Is the basic gist that the OFX (and QIF) import
process doesn't handle detection of transfers between asset accounts very well?
 What would be the criteria for matching the previously imported first half of a
transfer transaction?  I'd consider writing a script to pre-process my OFX files
if necessary to get this to work.  

BTW, my process and intent is to track my cashflow each month by importing
several OFX files representing multiple asset files, plus OFX/QIF files
representing credit card and investment activity.  As there is a lot of
transferring going on between asset accounts in order to cover checks, etc., it
would be really handy to find a way to make this work.
