Building GnuCash

I'm having trouble building GnuCash.

I've installed all the listed stuff from GNOME 1.4, Guild, slib, g-wrap, 
and four different versions of the gal library - 0.19.2, 0.7, 0.8, and 
0.9.1. I'm still getting an error message from configure which reads:

checking for main in -lgal... no
configure: error: gal library not found. See the README and config.log 
for more info.

Any suggestions?
