I'm going to assume you mean "before it lets [me] do anything" / "during
startup".

If that's the case, then you can start gnucash with --nofile, and use
the settings to turn off the "run at startup" option.

a/ Just to make sure -- you are running 1.8.9, correct?

b/ Are you willing to share you data file with me [privately, of  
   course!] so I can try to reproduce and fix?
