However, IIRC Suse 8.0 supplies by default a GC 1.6.x, while Suse 8.2 was the 
first to make the leap to the 1.8.x series.  Which clearly would pose some 
problems if John wanted to share the data file between the 2 machines....

OTOH, Suse 8.0 is now no longer supported for patches etc, so sticking with it 
may not be a good long-term strategy.
