derek,

   I blew away the install directory so config.log and the make output are gone.

   However, at the point where it was trying to build lgal it said that it
could not find it. Since I had just installed it I knew it was there. So I
looked at the what exactly was happening. gal has a bunch of dependencies
and two were unsatisfied: ldb1 and lgnomecanvaspixbuf. I installed each of
those (gnome-pixbuf for the latter and the Berkeley DB1 specifically for the
former) and it finished building.
