problem with 'unable to retrieve quotes'

I have SUSE linux 9.2 which includes gnucash 1.8.8.
I've just started using this for the first time.
I've set up one simple account with stock INTC, which
is a nasdaq stock, and set yahoo as quote source.
When I click in the price editor on 'get quotes'
I get an error message: 
"Unable to retrieve quotes for these items:
NASDAQ:intc"
The command 'dump-finance-quote yahoo intc'
gives a correct looking reply.
(by the way: the command 'dump-finance-quote yahoo
NASDAQ:intc' doesn't work)

Any suggestion how to fix this?
Is there debug info somewhere that makes it easy
to trace what's going wrong?
