Can't open account

First, that's a backup file, not your data file.
Second, if it's not loading that file, something is really wrong.  What do you
get from:

    head Account\ Summary.20050122173006.xac

Did you actually name your data file "Account Summary"?  That seems like a
strange name, IMHO.

generally... none.  Gnucash does not impose any specific filename extension, so
it'll use whatever you gave it for the primary data file.
