Turn off the scheduled transaction processing and then open the file. It 
sounds like one of the scheduled transaction records has gone awry. Go to the 
Preferences, click on Scheduled Transactions and uncheck the "Run on GnuCash 
start" option.

GnuCash locks the data file whilst it is in use and if GnuCash crashes, the 
lock remains in place.
