I just checked the Gentoo package database at 
http://packages.gentoo.org/search/?sstring=gnucash

They report AMD64 and IA64 builds for gnucash 1.8.11, although they are 
currently masked as unstable. There is also an open bug against AMD64, 
although the text in the report makes it sound like a known GCC problem.

The ebuild script shows no patches being applied for any platform, so 
nothing has been taken from CVS.

In summary, it sounds like some people are running gnucash on 64 bit 
platforms.
