1.8.x is the latest stable version. If you want to work with important 
financial data, don't upgrade *at all* until gnucash 2.0.0 is available for 
your distribution.

1.9.x is for developers and testers ONLY. You should be familiar with building 
packages from source and/or SVN/CVS. Instructions are included in the release 
and SVN that are normally sufficient for such circumstances.
