I read digest, so my apologies if someone has already answered this.

You say that guile-1.6 is available in /sw/bin.  Are you certain that  
it's the 1.6 version that's in /sw/bin?  For instance, here's what my  
setup looks like:

... that is, even though guile-16 is installed, the guile 1.6 binary  
lives in a funny place to avoid conflicting with the guile 1.4 binary.
