Can't start GNUCash anymore

Hello,

I have entered some transactions in GNUCash, saved it and closed. I
wanted to restart it to add a transaction but it failed to start.  A few
windows popped up and closed.  I cannot start GNUCash.

What can be wrong with and how can I fix it?

I use GNUCash 1.8.10 on Debian Etch.
