Yes, it could solve this.  That was the first thing I tried, but implementing 
it turned out to be a little more problematic then I first realized.  Unionfs 
does indeed join mulitple filesystems into one, but it takes the two 
directories to be joined and combines them into a third.  It can't join a new 
directory into an already existing one.  They have to be combined into a 
third.  Since there was already a /home with necessary content, I would have 
to work back up the installation process in order to accomplish this.

In keeping with the Open Source standard of release early, release often, I 
decided to put it out there and get some feedback.
