multiple-currency problems

I have an account, type Bank with currency GBP -
according to Edit Account.  When I enter an
unbalancing split on a transaction, value first, it marks the
account for the split as "Orphan-USD" (and adds a corresponding
"Imbalance-USD" split also).

Why the USD?

There are some (other) accounts in the file denominated in USD,
and also some in EUR.

The default currency in Preferences/Accounts was USD, but
changing it to GBP has no effect either before or after
an app. restart.
