There is no need to stop what you are doing and run apt-get to install. If
the "make install" ran and gave you no errors, GnuCash probably installed
fine. I did this on Ubuntu myself, too, and the install script should have
added GnuCash to your Applications menu. I believe it puts it in the Office
folder (I'm not at my home computer now so I can't be certain). Or, just
type "gnucash" at the command line and see if it starts up. If so, then
you're good to go.

If not, you might want to try running "make uninstall" in the folder where
gnucash was compiled and use the apt-get method mentioned by Derek. It will
install an older version of GnuCash (Ubuntu doesn't keep the latest software
versions in their default repositories all the time), but it takes care of
all the installation steps for you. Once you get more familiar with Linux,
you can then install which ever version you want/need and your Account data
will still be ok.
