Unable to run GnuCash 2.2.1 on Windows -- Need assistance

I'm new to GnuCash and have just downloaded and installed GnuCash 2.2.1 on Wondows XP. When I run the application, an hourglass icon momentarily displays, but nothing else happens.

I've checked in taskmanager (and also processexplorer) and I can clearly see the following apps running:
D:/usr/gnucash/libexec\gconfd-2.exe 5
D:/usr/gnucash\bin\gconfd-2.exe 5
gnucash-bin

The application never actually renders to the screen. I'm not sure what I've done incorrectly or where next to look for the solution, any help would be appreciated.

System is installed:
Windows XP
GTK+ 2.10.13
GnuCash 2.2.1
