Inheriting subaccount register entries

I've looked through the FAQ for information on whether it's possible (or 
planned) to support inheriting register entries from subaccounts. This 
would be useful: I need to partition the contents of a single account, 
but use the account total column to double-check my data entry not only 
during reconciliation but also during day-to-day usage; consequently, 
being able to check "Include subaccounts" only in the reconcile 
interface is unfortunate.

I realize that the register UI would need a way to distinguish between 
local transactions and those inherited from a subaccount -- but that 
seems fairly straightforward (one option would be to use color to 
indicate these, and force split mode when they're selected).

Is this considered desirable functionality? Is any implementation 
planned or available?
