Well, if you want to point the devs of your WM here:
http://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=96, there is a
description of the problem and it's resolution for xmonad.
Essentially, gnucash is using a perfectly acceptable method to control
what parts of the Find dialog get displayed, but the WM's aren't
handling it properly. At least that's my take on it. Anywho, if you
file a bug against your WM with the link above, you may see some
response.
