Ouch! I assume you recovered what you could? ddrescue is a good tool for
that job.

Run the command file * - it will tell you what the files are. .xac files
are just gziped xml. If you can un-gzip them you'll be fine (just rename
them to have a .gz extension, and you can work with them as regular
gziped files).

You mean 0 byte files? If they are empty there is nothing in them, and
thus nothing to open.

Is that one very very very long filename?
Anyway, try running zless (or zmore) filename. If you can see the data
that way you're OK.
