Thanks for the suggestion. Although I already had the two dll's I went ahead and installed the SLL module from winnipeg. 
Things got a bit better but still not right so I decided to remove everything - perl, gnucash etc and start again - more carefully this time !

Hi,
Just a guess, and I don't use the online quote stuff in GC, nor do I use
Windows, but could this be a problem with a missing SSL perl module?
(see archives, something like crypt:SSLeay, IIRC)
