Probably because you didn't read the documentation. But GnuCash did
prevent you from hurting yourself by not letting you set the account
commodity to a non-currency.

Correct. GnuCash lumps accounts into three categories:
Asset/Liability, Income/Expense, and Equity. Parents/Children can
only be in the same category (although in some cases some account
types limit the children types even further).

Although at this point I haven't seen an actual bug, just a user not
understanding how to setup GnuCash. The only bug I'm aware of is
that the New Hierarchy Druid allows you to create a Stock or Mutual
fund account without resetting the commodity to a non-currency. But
I believe we already have a bugzilla entry for that.
