Hmm. Leopard does a nasty:
find / -name gnucash.trace
/private/var/folders/mv/mvhhn92vG+m5tSMQ4ugNWk+++TI/-Tmp-/gnucash.trace

I think that gibberish directory is created with the launch of an X  
session. It almost certainly goes away with a reboot (the power  
problem mentioned earlier in the thread), and it might even go away  
when you quit x11.app.

Probably the fastest way to find it is
find /private/var/folders/mv -name gnucash.trace
