I just released the new version 2.0.11 of the GnucashEditor from jGnucashLib at

https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=147662

It contains this tool as a plugin in "Tools->Splitter".
You first select the new historic file to create and then
enter the date to split at, wait a second for it to run
and save the current file.

It works fine with a single currency. Please file a bug
if you find any issues regarding multiple currencies.
I'll try to test that these cases in detail before the start
of next week (monday).

Once it is confirmed that it works fine, I can mark it as stable in
the wiki.
