One more bit of information - I ran with --debug:

when I open the old data file, the following is in the gnucash.trace file
in $TMP:

* 21:54:11  INFO <gnc.commodity> [gnc_commodity_table_insert] insert
0x7ce29c0 XPT into nsp=0x872c1e0 CURRENCY
* 21:54:11  INFO <gnc.commodity> [gnc_commodity_table_insert] insert

* 21:54:11 INFO <gnc.account> [xaccAccountCommitEdit] freeing splits for
account 0x871a498 ()

(the first few lines are repeated many times for different codes - and
nothing is output after the last "freeing splits" line)

Any ideas?
