help with categories & strange boxes in Gnucash

this is a known issue with windows and gtk (the gui interface that
gnucash uses). There is a fix in the pipeline for gtk, but who knows
how long it will take to hit your machine. you should look for newer
versions of gtk to install. (or maybe you need a version of gnucash
built against the new version of gtk... that's probably the real
issue.). 

Short version, it's known and the fix will be along sooner or later.
