Workaround for Localization Behaviour?

Um, you said it.

However, I'm an expatriate. I like to have fr_CA as my locale, but  
that gives me the wrong currency -- everything I do is in USD.  
Overriding the locale currency in gnucash (Edit->Preferences->Accounts- 
 >"Default currency" and in other places) does not do anything for the  
register display, which is what counts. I could set LC_MONETARY, but  
that would change the number format as well as the monetary unit --  
definitely not what I want.

Seems like this setlocale() system has serious flexibility issues.  
I'll have to hack my own locale, apparently. (yuck.)
