GnuCash 2.2.5 Compilation Cookbook for Ubuntu Hardy Heron (simplified)

For programs I compile myself I usually do

./configure --prefix=/usr/local/opt/gnucash-2.2.5

and then use stow to install it into /usr/local so that I can manage
multiple versions, it's easy to uninstall and it's in a "standard"
location. Gnucash will work in /opt/local but other programs may not.
