Is X11 installed and running on that machine?

I'm guessing the person executed gnucash from within Apple's terminal  
application. I would first enter:
export DISPLAY=:0.0

and then try again.

If that doesn't work, start up the X11 xterm program instead of  
Apple's terminal application.
