installing gnucash on Red Hat Enterprise 5

I'm trying to build gnucash on Red Hat EL 5, but having problems when I
try to install any slib variant which is required for gnucash.

slib rpms are not available for RH EL 5, so I've tried various Fedora
versions, but receive the following error:

ERROR: Unbound variable: slib:features

Following what appears to be a successful installation of the rpm.

If I try to run the ./configure script for gnucash-2.2.4, I get the
following error:

Cannot find SLIB. Are you sure you have it installed?
    See http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=347922
    and http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=483631

If I try installing slib from source, I do not get and error from the
slib installation, but I still get the above error with the gnucash
configure.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
