I looked at this wiki but the current instructions there were about 
rebuilding the Gnucash package from source code found from the 
repositories in order to add some banking stuff. I didn't want to 
connect to banks with this application, I just wanted a more up to date 
version. For some reason (I now forget the details) I found these 
instructions difficult/impossible to implement. I abandoned the idea of 
building a package and instead just built the Gnucash binary using 
source and instructions from Gnucash's own site.

For now, if anyone requests it, I'd rather post the instructions here 
and if folks think it useful I would endeavour to find out how to add 
them to the Debian wiki, never having done this sort of thing before.
