Date format with retrieved quotes

For starters I have never seen a format dd/mm/yy anywhere in europe.
I see the ISO-format yyyy-mm-dd (string-sortable) and dd.mm.yyyy all the
time. Sometimes dd.mm.yy but never dd/mm/yy .
Quite some code tries to auto-detect that strange us-thing with mm/dd/yy by
looking for the "/" in the format.
