Getting the "Num" column width to persist between sessions?

I had the same problem in Ubuntu and fixed it by running gconf-editor.
Make sure that gnucash is NOT running (if you don't, changes won't stick)
Select apps-> gnucash-> window-> pages-> register
Change num_width entry to something suitable
Close gconf-editor
Restart gnucash.
