Thanks for that, it is really what I needed.  Although all the replies have 
been very helpful, as I hoped :-)

I kind of thought that GnuCash may be still a little early in the dev cycle 
for my club.  As has been said the problems I am experiencing are likely 
third party libraries rather than GnuCash itself, it's a shame as GnuCash 
looks very comprehensive in its functionality and I am quite impressed by 
its documentation.  I also like the way it can batch import QIF files from 
several accounts and cross-match transfers between them.  However its size 
and current level of responsiveness on Windows would likely deter many from 
discovering these advantages.  I think it has a bright future and I'll be 
keeping a close eye on it.
