Can no longer open one of two Gnucash files

I continue to use Gnucash 1.8.11, which does everything I want.
I have two files, banking and shares.
Today, when I opened Gnucash, the shares file was loaded.
Usually, if I want banking instead, I use "open recent" and select "banking".
Today, that's not working.
A few times, I got the message about Gnucash being unable to obtain the lock for the file. I searched for and deleted the only .LCK file I could find and tried again, but that made no difference.
Now, I'm not getting that message anymore, but I'm told the file's being read, then a window opens for a second that I think says something about "since last run" and then the application closes down completely. I tried to open a banking.xac file instead, but I haven't been able to get that to work either.
I'd be very grateful for some directions as to how to get back into my banking file.
Thank you for reading this.
