Normal in any business setting for an organization to have multiple 
"books" for different purposes. Thus the main books for the organization 
might have a transaction noting "office supplies for June" (so much 
spent) where asset transfer is from the main bank account restoring that 
amount to the petty cash fund. But the petty cash fund would have its 
own books in which were recorded these transfers of money in and the 
individual small purchases made.

You might try the same thing here. Don't worry if you can't get GnuCash 
to use appropriate titles and you end up having "vendors" or "customers" 
instead of "donors". That's easily edited in reports after export.
