Setting up a Share Portfolio

I am in the process of escaping the clutches of Quicken 2009 and, of
course Windows. GnuCash seems to be an excellent replacement program.

The bookkeeping side of things presents me with no problem. However,
setting up my investment portfolio is confusing me. Despite having
followed the Help commentary.

It would assist me greatly if someone out there could send me a typical
working sample of a share portfolio that contains:

Opening Balance
share value updates
dividends received
and the respective contra accounts.
