Crash on start. Win2k gconfd-2.exe crashes

It's clearly a problem only on windows.  I don't know if it's user
error or a bug..  If it is a bug it's not a bug in gnucash per-se;
more likely a bug in GConf.  However the fact that it's not being
reported by LOTS of people would imply that it's something specific
to your environment.  For example, what is your Windows UserName?
