How are log files used?

I want to be able to find out what transactions were *entered* in
gnucash on a given date in the past -- not the date those transactions
were transacted, which gnucash does record. Can the .xac or the .log
files be used for this purpose?

Presumably the .xac files can be opened the same was as the master file
can be opened, but how are the .log files opened?
