Finding the maximum balance during a period?

Short of writing custom Scheme code, or other code to parse and process your
Gnucash accounting file, you could try an Asset Barchart (Reports > Assets &
Liabilities > Asset Barchart). Then in the report options, pick only your
savings account, and set the date range to the start and end of 2008. You
can also set the step size to a week or even a day to close in on that
particular date on which you had the highest balance. Finally, go into the
savings account register and scroll to around that date and get the highest
balance.

I know, this is a bit awkward!
