you might want to try this macro for importing data from gnucash into 
open office http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/gnuc2ooo
there is an example of how to get account summary for every month:

is that any close to what you want?
incidentally, i would also love to have such report available within gc 
without having to go though the macro for export and pivot table 
building. if anyone is aware of any progress in this direction i would 
like to know.
