enter splits in cheque acount

Hi List,
Running GnuCash 2.2.9 for windows in windows XP Proffesional.

I went through the archives for the last few months and can not find about 
splits that I want to do.

This is not a " stocks " account.

I want to put the following in my cheque acount monthly in a splits which 
should remain constant for a long time.

Income ..say..  1000
Taxes..say..      100
The balance should now read  900.
The relative accounts should be changed accordingly.
I do not seem to get it right..tried different inputs.

Kindly please, step by step, new to GnuCash, I used Quicken and it was 
fairly easy once you got the hang and is not supported here any longer.
