Some time ago I implemented many of Peter Selinger's suggestions in
Gnucash. Since these changes were not considered acceptable and
probably won't ever be made part of the standard version of Gnucash I
decided to make them available as a patch. Bug 537476,
<https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=537476>, describes the
changes I made and contains the patch to implement them. I just
updated the patch to work with version 2.3.5 of Gnucash. In addition
to working with the newer version, it also changes things so that the
trading accounts created are a new account type instead of pretending
to be income accounts. See the note attached to the new patch for more
information.

Please note that trading accounts are entirely optional. Be default
the patched version of Gnucash won't create them. Only if you turn on
the new option I added will they be created.

If you're willing to build Gnucash from source, this patch would let
you experiment with trading accounts and see how they work for you. If
anyone else has tried the patch, I'd love to hear about your
experiences with it. I've been using trading accounts for a couple of
years now and haven't found any big problems.

I haven't been very good about keeping the patch up to date, but if
there's interest in it I'll try to do better in the future.
